The best of MLS in 08

The 2008 Major League Soccer season came to a close just hours ago, with DC United's playoff hopes being crushed by the Columbus Crew. United will join us, San Jose, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Colorado as playoff spectators this time around.

My first bit of season review will come in the form of my MLS Best XI. The players I have selected have been chosen for season-long form. They may not necessary be the league's best overall at their respective positions, but certainly were in top form this season.

--------------------------Will Hesmer------------------------
---Frankie Hejduk---Jimmy Conrad---Jonathan Bornstein---
----------------Shalrie Joseph----Carl Robinson--------------
David Beckham-----------------------------Darren Huckerby
-----------------Guillermo Barros Schelotto------------------
--------Kenny Cooper---------------Landon Donovan-------

Will Hesmer (CLB): Hesmer back stopped the Crew to the Supporters Shield this past season and was quite dominant in doing so. He led the league in wins and was in the top 3 in both shutouts and save percentage.

Frankie Hejduk (CLB): Columbus’ captain was at his usual best this season. A regular member of the US national team, Hejduk featured in the MLS All-Star game against West Ham in July.

Jimmy Conrad (KCW): The Wizards’ captain may have fallen off of Bob Bradley’s radar for the time being, but five goals from six shots on goal for a centre-half is a phenomenal statistic.

Jonathan Bornstein (CHV): The young American is full of pace and has bright future ahead of him. His versatility is a big asset to the Goats as he can play at both left back and left midfield.

Shalrie Joseph (NER): The experienced midfielder proved to be one of the league’s best players again this season. He has the ability to control the midfield like no one else in Major League Soccer.

Carl Robinson (TOR): The lone TFC player in my best eleven, Robinson provides us with immeasurable leadership and vast experience. He really shone for us this year playing in his natural role as a holding midfielder.

David Beckham (LAG): I’m not jumping on the “Beckham Bandwagon” here; he is actually is this good. Finally healthy, the league’s goldenboy provided 5 goals and 10 assists this season.

Darren Huckerby (SJE): He’s only been here for half of a season, but with 6 goals and 4 assists in 13 matches in MLS, the former Canary emerged as one of the league’s best and most exciting players.

Guillermo Barros Schelotto (CLB): Diving and playacting aside, Schelotto was phenomenal this season. The Argentine playmaker provided 6 goals and 19 assists for Columbus, making him a favourite for league MVP.

Kenny Cooper (FCD): The big man had quite the coming out party this year, having been linked to several clubs in England. The former Manchester United trainee spearheaded the Hoops’ attack all season.

Landon Donovan (LAG): Toronto’s most hated villain scored nearly a goal a game in 2008. The Galaxy may have been terrible, but with Beckham and Donovan were always an exciting team to watch.

There is my league-wide best eleven. What do you think? What is your MLS Best XI for 2008?
