Three Canadian cities bidding for 2011 expansion

As Mark Abbott announced late this afternoon, there are indeed seven cities vying for MLS expansion for 2011. They are Atlanta, Miami, Montréal, Ottawa, Portland, St. Louis, and Vancouver.

Let's focus on the Canadian bids. It's no secret that Montréal and Vancouver are the front runners, with Ottawa hoping to be a darkhorse. It's nearly impossible to predict, but I am pretty confident that one of the two cities selected for 2011 expansion will be Canadian.

Montréal, whose bid is lead by the Saputo family and George Gillet, already have a soccer specific stadium. The Stade Saputo was completed this spring, however with only 13,000 seats, an expansion of the stadium would be necessary for the Montréal to be chosen for MLS. Don Garber attended the grand opening of the stadium this past May.

Vancouver, backed by Greg Kerfoot, Steve Nash, and Jeff Mallett, has a proposed soccer specific stadium in the heart of the city. Waterfront Stadium would be a truly unique experience for any North American football fan. Its initial capacity would seat 15,000, with the potential to expand to 30,000. The Vancouver Whitecaps of the USL, of course, just won the league's championship.

Eugene Melnyk recently made headlines with his late bid for the city of Ottawa. Melnyk has proposed a brand new soccer stadium in the nation's capital adjacent to Scotiabank Place, the home of the NHL's Ottawa Senators. Ottawa is the smallest city to submit a bid, and in my mind the least likely out of the seven cities.

So, Toronto FC and MLS fans, it's time for the first ever TFC Connected poll.
