How do you fix the Galaxy?

The self-proclaimed "crown jewel" of Major League Soccer put in another stinker again this year. The Galaxy have not made the playoffs since 2005.

This past Saturday, with their season on the line in Houston, they came out and lost it all in the first 25 minutes. A 3-0 loss saw Los Angeles officially eliminated from the playoffs, in truly unimpressive fashion.

They have decided to head down under for an Oceania tour again. They did the same thing last year and played against Sydney FC and the Wellington Phoenix.

I think that it's great for our league that we have a club that can attract supporters just about anywhere in the world, however I think they should focus on gaining credibility in MLS before trying to show off to everyone.

Goldenballs and Landycakes need more to work with, and as much as I hate to admit it, a good Los Angeles Galaxy team is better for Major League Soccer as a whole.

2008 was a season of turmoil for the Galaxy. Both Abel Xavier and Carlos Ruiz flopped, head coach Ruud Gullit resigned, and team president Alexi Lalas was sacked. Since then, Eddie Lewis has been brought in to the midfield, with Bruce Arena forming a new coaching partnership with Dave Sarachan.

Are these steps in the right direction for Los Angeles? What do you think? Where does LA need to improve? How are they going to improve? Is Bruce Arena the right man to turn things around in Hollywood?

I wouldn't say it's the club that attracts supporters at all to be honest. I was at the Phoenix vs Galaxy game - there was the usual crowd of people such as myself who went to support the Phoenix, then an amount of people who went to support Beckham while wearing Man U/Real Madrid/England kit, then tonnes and tonnes of screaming schoolgirls. I didn't encounter any genuine Galaxy fans - anyone wearing a Galaxy top there would have no idea who Landon Donovan is. The large majority of the crowd were there for Beckham, not the Galaxy - and that's because he's (apparently) attractive, not because of his football ability. It might have earned LA a few more supporters but not much. It wasn't a football event, it was a celebrity event. The same people would have gone if he played for the Bermuda Hogs, let alone LA Galaxy.

I agree with you on the Galaxy needing to become credible first. The wow-factor of having Beckham will fade soon enough, they'll need results. Otherwise, people might think "You know, considering how bad the Galaxy are, Beckham can't be THAT good" and there goes the star pull.

Excellent points Robb.

Basically, what I meant by that statement was that just about anywhere worldwide, footy fans know the name of at least one MLS club because of David Beckham.

I do agree that nobody outside of Los Angeles really cares about the Galaxy, and if you took David Beckham out of the equation, they wouldn't attract anyone overseas.
