The season has ended and the eyes of every Toronto FC supporter will be on our general manager, Mo Johnston.
After a rough first year in Major League Soccer, many people expected a whirlwind of changes heading into training camp last spring. Unfortunately, many supporters were left confused by the lack of transfer activity, with the only major transaction being the departure of Ronnie O'Brien.
It wasn't until after this season began that adequate help was signed. This came in the form of Rohan Ricketts, Amado Guevara, and Laurent Robert.
After going on a 6-2-1 run in May and June, it seemed as if we had turned a corner and were playoff bound. As we all know, though, it wasn't to be. Danny Dichio struggled with concussion related injuries and Jeff Cunningham's performances on the pitch resembled those of an amateur. Olivier Tebily left to return to France, and Laurent Robert's poor performances meant he was released.
Amidst all this, though, Mo has set us up quite nicely for the future. The young players in the squad, including Marvell Wynne, Ibby Ibrahim, Chad Barrett, Johann Smith, Nana Attakora-Gyan, and Tyler Rosenlund, have phenomenal potential. Add in that we have three first round draft picks in 2009, including the second pick overall, I would say we are sitting pretty nicely heading into next season.
I suppose only time will tell if Mo proves his critics wrong, but he still has my support this winter. Year three will likely be the year that the conclusions are drawn on Mo's performance as general manager, and hopefully these conclusions are good.
