Training Notes - January 7, 2009

With the draft fast-approaching, trade speculation is starting to gain more and more momentum. According to Soccer by Ives' latest article, Trader Mo is ready to deal with over half of the teams in the league are interested in acquiring our no. 2 and no. 4 picks.

The other day, Buzz Carrick said that he doesn't think Adrian Serioux will be coming to Toronto, but it's looking more and more likely that the Hoops will try to work out a deal in order to be able to select defender Omar Gonzalez. If you were to ask me right now, I would tell you that I expect this to get done, one way or another.

Another option that Ives mentions that is pretty exciting to think about is Chicago's big Colombian centre half, Wilman Conde. Conde is the perfect candidate for the big, commanding rock in our defense that John Carver has expressed a need for. Apparently we were trying to get Conde earlier in 2008, but that trade didn't work out. If Chicago are willing to part with him, I can't see Mo passing up the opportunity to trade for him.

Here are some links for some other news and notes today...

Nana Attakora-Gyan was named the top male U20 soccer player in Canada in 2008 on Tuesday. Of all the young Canadian's on TFC, I think he has the most potential to be a star defender in Major League Soccer. John Carver has high hopes for him as well.

Duane Rollins offers some more information about the DeRo situation. He maintains that the deal will get done.

According to Julian De Guzman, the CSA is a cancer to the development of the game in our country. Does anyone disagree with him?

Tribal Football has Rosenborg fullback Roy Miller linked with a one year lean move to Seattle Sounders FC. They also mention that the Sounders are also keen on Valencia striker Fernando Morientes.

The Chicago Fire are closing in on re-signing designated player Cuauhtémoc Blanco.

FC Dallas reject and former DP, Denilson, has been given a trial at Bolton Wanderers. He scored one goal in his brief tenure in MLS - a penalty against us. If he can't cut it in MLS, why does Gary Megson think he'll be fit for the Premiership?

The Wizards may have no fans, but they are still at the top in venue capacity! Even with a new SSS coming, does anyone think KC will get more than 10,000 a game anytime soon?

MLS has officially released the 2009 Generation Adidas class.

Analysts are predicting that if Portland were to be awarded an MLS franchise in 2011, they wouldn't turn a profit until 2015.

Montréal Impact defender and former Canadian international Gabriel Gervais has retired from professional soccer.

DC United have re-signed midfielder Santino Quaranta. Many DC supporters thought Quaranta's play was excellent in the absence of injured star Marcelo Gallardo.

According to Soccer365, the Los Angeles Galaxy are considering making a player for veteran Roma defender Christian Panucci.

The heads of the CSA are the George Bushs of Canada. Don't have a damn clue of what they're doing and decide everything else for thier own personal gain.

Good to see that Attakora-Gyan is making progress. I kind of had the impression that most of the original players signed to development contracts probably weren't going to make it, hopefully he proves me wrong.

Conde doesnt want to play under anyone but Osario and this is his last year, terrible move on TFCs part... Id be surprised if he resigned with the league after his contract is done.
