I was in Columbus this weekend, so I didn't get a chance to catch as many games as usual. I caught all the highlights though, which included a stunning strike from Seattle's Colombian phenom Fredy Montero. Here's the week two weekend rewind...
DC United 1 - 1 Chicago Fire
Goals: Luciano Emilio 7' (DCU); Patrick Nyarko 53' (CHI)
For the second week running, DC United succumbed to the "2008 TFC Syndrome," squandering a first-half lead to the Fire, who left Cuauhtémoc Blanco and Chris Rolfe on the bench to start again. I don't know if these guys have picked up knocks or what - but this Fire team has picked up 4 road points without two of its best players in their starting eleven. As for DC, slow starts are becoming a trend. Never write these guys off though - they have started 0-3-0 in both of the last two seasons. I don't think this year's team is as good as their 2007 or 2008 versions (and their 2008 version wasn't exactly good...).
New York Red Bulls 1 - 1 New England Revolution
Goals: Own Goal (Jay Heaps) 35' (NYRB); Kenny Mansally 90' (NER)
The Red Bulls need Albert Celades, and they need him bad. Their midfield isn't looking so hot right now. Can Celades and Rojas form an effective partnership though? That remains to be seen. Juan Carlos Osorio seems like a pretty tactical coach - he's always scribbling down notes. Do great tacticians have ridiculously inconsistent teams? I think questions must be raised. New England got a last-minute equaliser through Gambian Kenny Mansally. They may not have the swagger they've had in the past, but this year's Revolution side looks to be a gritty one that can grind out results.
Colorado Rapids 2 - 1 Kansas City Wizards
Goals: Terry Cooke 65', Omar Cummings 74' (COL); Michael Kraus 69' (KCW)
At their grand home opener, the Rapids got...11,800 fans. Oh well, I hope they enjoyed that win, because I don't they will see a lot of them [wins...] this season. Terry Cooke and Omar Cummings scored for Colorado. These guys are two of their best players, and it's a good sign for the Rapids that they are contributing early on. The Wizards lost again. They are the worst team on paper in the East, and they've showed it thus far. You know things are bad when you're relying on Michael Kraus to score your goals.
San Jose Earthquakes 3 - 2 Houston Dynamo
Goals: Ryan Johnson 30', Arturo Alvarez 33', Cam Weaver 44' (SJE); Chris Wondolowski 34', Brad Davis 36' (HOU)
Five goals in 15 minutes. Boy, it sucks that I missed that. I'm happy I didn't see the rest of this one though - as I don't anticipate it was too exciting. The Quakes offense was missing in week one, but exploded on Saturday for three goals. Cam Weaver contributed a goal and an assist, as did Arturo Alvarez. Darren Huckerby also got his first assist of the season. The Dynamo were Brian Ching-less (it's a word, for real), and he's their only really good striker right now aside from the injured Kei Kamara. They still scored two though, so I don't think they will be winless for too long.
Seattle Sounders FC 2 - 0 Real Salt Lake
Goals: Nate Jaqua 17', Fredy Montero 77' (SEA)
Well done Seattle. You've beaten a good team - not some piss-poor Red Bulls team. You shut out a team that many are tipping to win the West. Salt Lake did have a majority of the possession for a good portion of the match though. Unfortunately for them, it's the goals that count, and Seattle had two beautiful ones. Rookie Steve Zakuani cleverly assisted Nate Jaqua in the first half before Fredy Montero doubled the lead with a 30-yard wonderstrike. Can they do it on the road? Well, they're in our house this weekend. They can have fun with that.
Chivas USA 2 - 0 FC Dallas
Goals: Eduardo Lillingston 56' Bojan Stepanovic 75' (CHV)
The Goats felt no ill-effects in missing Sacha Kljestan to international duty. They handily beat Dallas 2-0, who are looking really bad. Remember when I mocked Colorado's attendance? Well, Dallas had 6,500. We had about 1/3 of that in a stadium 700 km away on Saturday. Anyhow, Chivas are now tied for first in MLS, and if they can stay healthy, they'll remain near the top of the table.
That's week two in a nutshell. I think it's time we took Seattle off of their little throne this weekend.

Dude you are an idiot.
And learn your Queen's English language for f*** sake? It's throne not thrown...
I had 10 minutes to write this post. Sorry you're so irked by one grammatical error.
"KC is the worst team on paper in the east" I will remember that in Oct. Don't forget...the first shall be last and the last shall be first
Sure thing.
