Carlos Ruiz, take off eh

Thank God it's Friday - and this Friday comes with some excellent, excellent news, not only for us, but for MLS as a whole. Carlos Ruiz looks to be headed down to Paraguay. Did this just make your day?

Marcelo Gallardo set to leave DC United

Marcelo Gallardo, DC United's designated player and playmaker is entering contract exit talks. He will be joining up with Argentine side River Plate.

The 33 year-old Argentine arrived before the 2008 season, and scored 4 goals and 3 assists in 15 league matches before a hernia operation sidelined him for the rest of the season.

I always thought that if he was healthy, he'd be a huge impact player in MLS. In fact, I was hoping he'd stick around for the 2009 season to prove his worth, and offer up some more servings for goal of the year. Two of his four last season were nominated. This guy is a class finisher.

So, what does this mean for DC? Word on the street is that Christian Gomez is dying to get back to Washington, so expect a trade with Colorado to happen before the season begins.

Training Notes - January 29, 2009

Rohan Ricketts was kind enough to let me know that pre-season training starts on Monday. A couple guys to look out for coming in on trial are Gregory Richardson and Keon Daniel. I also remember reading that there will be a total of 7 or 8 trialists, with John Carver mentioning that they are 10x better than last year's.

It looks like we made a trade yesterday. We acquired a senior international spot from Houston, which helped them sign Felix Garcia.

Holy crap! David Beckham scored for a second match straight for AC Milan. Is his departure from MLS only a formality now? Apparently not, according to the Galaxy. Give this a read.

Everyone's favourite fishy, Carlos Ruiz, looks like he might end up back in Los Angeles, but with Chivas USA instead of the Galaxy.

DC United's Argentine DP Marcelo Gallardo is very likely going to sign with River Plate. According to one source in DC, he issue should be resolved in the next few days. Stay tuned with this one, as Christian Gomez could be headed back to Washington from Colorado if Gallardo leaves.

SBI is reporting that the Quakes and the Galaxy are set to battle it out for the signing of American winger Bobby Convey from Reading the English Championship.

Seattle Sounders FC have signed USL rookie of the year Osvaldo Alonso.

The Vancouver Sun is reporting that the chanes for the Whitecaps MLS bid to be accepted are getting better by the day.

The 2009 Schedule is out

Our 2009 schedule was released today. Check it out. Time to plan those family vacations around the home matches!

Training Notes - January 27, 2009

So, as you can probably tell, Monday is a terrible day for me for blogging - between work and school, I don't have much time to update things.

If you haven't already watched it, check out this video on Toronto FC TV. It's a great summary of the DeRo press conference and the meet and greet with fans. Stoked for kickoff yet? It's only 53 days away.

Soccer by Ives is reporting that AC Milan are set to make MLS an offer to keep David Beckham. I wouldn't be surprised if we're saying "bye bye Becks" soon.

The San Jose Earthquakes have reached a jersey sponsorship deal with Amway Global.

Seattle Sounders FC added some more defensive help on Monday by acquiring Patrick Ianni from Houston in exchange for a 2010 draft pick.

The Dynamo did, though, re-sign star centre half Bobby Boswell. Boswell was recently in Turkey on trial, however nothing developed.

Chivas USA have re-signed former Swiss international Raphael Wicky to a new contract. The midfielder missed the majority of the 2008 season through injury.

Bruce Arena put the Michael Owen rumours to bed. The LA Galaxy will not be signing the Newcastle striker - surprise, surprise.

Honduran striker Carlos Costly is set to seal a move to Birmingham City in the Championship. He has been linked to us in the past, and most recently was linked with the Kansas City Wizards and LA Galaxy.

DC United have signed Brazilian defender Roger to a one-year deal. Roger last played at Fluminese in Brazil.

Meanwhile, Steve Goff is speculating that United's DP, Marcelo Gallardo, could be on his way back to Argentina, setting up things for the return of Christian Gomez.

LA Galaxy in for Owen

So, it's not going to happen, but still...just think about it.

It looks like the Los Angeles Galaxy are lining up a move for Newcastle United's English star Michael Owen. The striker is out of contract at the end of the season, and will available on a Bosman free transfer. He is apparently open to all offers, especially those in the range of his current £5M salary from the Magpies, and the Galaxy certainly have the money to back up their offer.

In order to sign Owen, the Galaxy would have to acquire a second designated player slot, which could be available from the New York Red Bulls. With the potential exit of Landycakes to Bayern Munich, the Galaxy will be wanting to add to its strike force, and despite his injury problems, Owen likely has many good years of football ahead of him.

So, from a "best for the Galaxy" standpoint, if both Becks and Landycakes return, and they add Michael Owen, they would be one of the most exciting teams to watch in MLS. It is quite the long shot, but an interesting thought. Are the Galaxy dreaming? You could definitely argue that. It would be a great pick up for MLS as a whole though.

Feel free to comment on any of your thoughts.

Keon Daniel and Gregory Richardson

Check out this video of Mo Johnston after the DeRo Press Conference.

Early in December, MLS Rumors had us linked to Trinidad and Tobago international midfielder Keon Daniel. Kristian Jack at The Score was on it quickly, and confirmed the rumours shortly after. In the linked interview, Mo mentions he is still looking at having him come in for pre-season. The 22 year-old has 5 goals in 15 appearances with the Soca Warriors and has previously had trials with Manchester United and West Ham United. He is apparently a set-piece specialist.

Another name that he mentioned was Gregory Richardson. The Guyanese striker currently plies his trade with Joe Public FC in Trinidad and Tobago, and scored a hat-trick for them in their 4-0 win over the New England Revolution in the CONCACAF Champions League. Mo is confident that he will be in training camp this pre-season as well.

Training Notes - January 23, 2009

DeRo Day has come and gone, and it's time to focus on filling some holes - mainly that huge on in our defense. Yesterday, Mo Johnston said he was looking at a kid in England to come over. Could he be referring to Canadian David Edgar? There is also rumours that Mo will look for a CB within the league. I wonder what the Hoops would want for Adrian Serioux...

At the Footy Blog, James Sharman writes about his conversations yesterday with Mo Johnston, Dwayne De Rosario, and Tom Anselmi. He mentions that the Pablo Vitti deal is still on, but Independiente are holding things up.

According to the Metro News, MLSE has officially purchased Gol TV Canada.

Seattle Sounders FC have made a significant signing in landing 22 year-old Colombian phenom Freddy Montero. This guy could be great in MLS.

Ronnie O'Brien won't be returning to the San Jose Earthquakes in 2009. It sounds like the Quakes didn't offer Ronnie enough money. Would you want him to give the turf a second try?

The Daily Mail is reporting that David Beckham is keen to extend his stay in Milan.

Cuban defector Reynier Alcantara has wound his way up on trial at Chivas USA, joining fellow Cuban Maykel Galindo.

Red Bull Arena won't be opening until 2010. Looks like another year with an empty stadium with throwball lines for New York.

Landycakes scored 2 more for Bayern Munich. He now has 4 goals in 5 appearances for the German Giants.

DC United loaned defender Gonzalo Peralta to Argentine Club Union Santa Fe on Thursday.

Also, DC's American international midfielder Ben Olsen is aiming to return from injury this year. Olsen's career was nearly ended through an ankle injury before last season.

Colorado Rapids Scottish striker Tom McManus could be set to follow Kenny Deuchar's footsteps in returning to the SPL. He is being linked to Kilmarnock.

Training Notes - DeRo Edition

Today was the day. Dwayne De Rosario was formally introduced to the media and fans as a Toronto FC player. There are a few articles that have already surfaced, and I'll be adding more as I stumble across them. If you find any, feel free to leave the link in a comment.

From watching the press conference, it's obvious that Dwayne is here with the right attitude and the right motives and wants nothing more than to bring the MLS Cup to his hometown. John Carver answered questions about where to play DeRo, and I think one option is alongside Guevara just behind a lone striker. With Guevara, Robbo, and now DeRo, the middle of the field will look pretty stacked no matter how JC decides to play the three.

On a side note, Mo did mention Pablo Vitti, saying, "Can we sign him? Possibly." If you ask me, that certainly does not sound too optimistic, considering he was about "90% locked up" on draft day. Mo also mentioned that there were 1 or 2 guys who would likely be on their way out, and I can't help but think Brian Edwards is one of them.

DeRo Links

John Molinaro at CBC writes "DeRo completes 'dream move' to Toronto FC." Dwayne did say a couple times during the press conference that coming to play here is a dream come true.

From Sportsnet, we have an article from the Canadian Press about the press conference as well as a video. Gerry Dobson went one on one with DeRo, asking him about the contract talks, the playing surface, and his jersey number.

Did you miss the press conference? No worries - click here for the archive.

Here is the article from MLSnet.com: "DeRo excited to return home."

In case you've forgotten (even though I know you haven't), the press conference to introduce Dwayne De Rosario is today at 3:00. The event will be streamed live by Toronto FC TV.

Here are some news and notes from around the world of Toronto FC and MLS today...

The Newcastle Chronicle has an article about John Carver. It's a pretty good feature, talking about how he hopes to lead us to MLS glory.

Check out Buzz Carrick's pre-draft list of the top 20 prospects. Anyone notice something interesting about the top 4? Yes, we drafted them all.

The Kansas City Wizards' new stadium is underway. Yesterday, the demolition of an old mall on the stadium site began.

The Wizards also announced yesterday that they have re-signed midfielders Jack Jewsbury and Davy Arnaud.

Los Angeles Galaxy defender and 2008 MLS Rookie of the Year Sean Franklin underwent hernia surgery on Wednesday. He is expected to be ready for the 2009 season opener.

The Vancouver Whitecaps have signed former Red Bull Anso Toure. His last name is Toure, so he must be good, right?

Seattle Sounders FC have signed defender Taylor Graham, who featured for the USL Sounders.

Sounders supporters will also get a special treat this summer when their club faces Chelsea at Qwest Field in a friendly.

The Red Bulls have formerly introduced Mike Petke to the club. This will be the defender's second stint with the team.

The San Jose Earthquakes have re-signed captain and veteran defender Nick Garcia to a multi-year deal.

Tribal Football is reporting that Reading midfielder Bobby Convey is a target for the Quakes.

And Soccer by Ives is reporting that the Quakes are set to acquire Dax McCarty from FC Dallas.

Steve Goff is confirming that at least one MLS club is interested in out of favour DC United defender Gonzalo Martinez. I know we're looking for a defender within MLS, but this guy is signed for $245K. Any takers?

Also from DC United, they have re-signed Liberian striker Francis Doe to a new one-year deal.

MLS Prime Time Thursday on ESPN is no more, but there will still be games shown on the network. Here's some details.

DeRo: Changing the game off of the pitch

Dwayne De Rosario is set to be officially unveiled as a Toronto FC player on Thursday afternoon, and our friends down at our front office will be streaming the press conference live on Toronto FC TV.

Obviously, from an on-field standpoint, the acquisition of DeRo is fantastic for our side. Everyone involved with the club has wanted this guy since we were introduced to MLS in 2006.

What about the off-field effects of DeRo, though? When was the last time Canada had a recognizable soccer star playing professionally in his home town? Has it ever happened?

To the non-soccer fan, De Rosario will likely still mean nothing for now, but to the Canadian soccer fan who isn't too keen on MLS yet, you'll know that name.

Let's go down to the grassroots level. When I was maybe 11 or 12 years old I had several favourite NHL players. Thinking of them now, every single one of them was Canadian. When I first started paying attention to soccer shortly after, I went with my Dutch heritage, supporting then-Manchester United striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy.

When you think about it, being able to relate to someone through their nationality is quite significant. Right now, soccer is at an all time high in Canada, and kids on the pitches province-wide (maybe even nationwide) will look at the heart of Toronto FC, and find a Canadian.

De Rosario will undoubtedly not only help Toronto FC's popularity grow, but the popularity of the sport overall in Canada. He will give the kids someone to aspire to, and the soccer fans someone to relate to.

We got our MLS team. Now we have our Canadian star. Be sure to check out the press conference on TFC TV at 3:00 on Thursday, as it will be a very historic day for our club.

DeRo Introduction on Thursday

The day we've all been waiting for is just around the corner. According to SBI, Dwayne De Rosario being introduced on Thursday.

Recently, I received some products from SoccerPro.com, an online soccer apparel and equipment store located in Missouri. I think their selection could improve a bit, but the products I received from them were very good.

When I placed the order, they sent me a confirmation email when it had been shipped with UPS tracking numbers. I knew what was going on the entire time, and found this to be something very helpful.

Training Notes - January 20, 2009

This whole "Pablo Vitti" thing has got me thinking. When Luciano Emilio signed with DC United, had you heard of him? Me neither. He earned his contract though, being named league MVP in his first season in Major League Soccer. He was 30, and had no history at all in Brazil's national set up. Now, Pablo Vitti is only 23, and was once one of Argentina's most promising talents, representing them at the U20 level. If you look at it from this perspective, he has the potential to be one of the league's top strikers. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he's 100% going to be a success (if he signs). You have to feel that he's just what we need though. He'll shake up our squad, bringing some South American flare. According to the Footy Podcast yesterday, he's also likely going to be pretty cheap for us. I think it's a win-win. All we can do now is wait for the presser.

Glenn Davis at the Houston Chronicle writes that MLS needs more passion, and aside from us, DC, and potentially Seattle, I agree with him.

The name of Philly's new team will be a vote. It looks like it's between Philadelphia SC, AC Philadelphia, Philadelphia Union, or Philadelphia City. I think the latter is the best.

Landycakes scored again for Bayern Munich, this time in a friendly agaisnt Kaiserslauten.

Good news for Sounders FC supporters: Freddie Ljungberg is recovering ahead of schedule.

Pablo Vitti

So, last week after the draft, Mo Johnston dropped a little hint that he had a South American striker nearly 90% locked up. Today, Kristian Jack uncovered that the deal is VERY close to getting done, and that the player is 23 year-old Argentine Pablo Vitti.

I've never seen Vitti play, not even in the summer when he was at BMO Field - I missed that one. From what I've read, he was once compared to players like Hernan Crespo, and since he's only 23, he could still somewhat grow into that potential. There is, though, every possibility that he could be on a drastic downfall in his level of play.

Before I look too much into him, I want to see a press release that he's signed for us, but I think it's a risk worth taking.

Training Notes - Friday, January 16, 2009

The draft has come and gone, and if that didn't make yesterday exciting enough, Mo Johnston said on the Fan 590 soccer show that he is in negotiations with an experienced South American striker. In fact, he tells Gerry Dobson that the striker is 90% locked up. I highly doubt it will be a DP striker, and I have no idea who he is. Mo said that once he signs a striker and a centre back, he's going home.

Toronto FC TV has interviews with our three first round draft picks, Sam Cronin, O'Brian White, and Stefan Frei. Here is the website's article about the three players.

Before the draft yesterday, Sounder at Heart heard from a scout down at the draft who thought that O'Brian White was possibly the top talent.

Sacha Kljestan could be going from friend to foe of Maurice Edu. The young Chivas winger is headed to Celtic for a trial.

Also with Chivas USA, Francisco Mendoza's move to Chivas de Guadelajara is now complete. He was originally on loan with the Mexican giants, but has now signed a permanent deal.

Duane Rollins at The 24th Minute talks about how 2009 could be a rebuilding year for the Goats, with the departure of Mendoza and potential departure of Kljestan.

Buzz Carrick at 3rd Degree says that Dax McCarty asked to be traded at the end of last season. He also puts any Christian Gomez to FCD rumours to bed.

Former Chicago Fire goalkeeper Matt Pickens is set for an MLS return with Colorado. He was with QPR for a bit last year in the Championship.

The LA Galaxy traded Canadian defender Ante Jazic to Chivas USA for their second round pick (19th overall).

The Galaxy did add some grit to their midfield the other day, though, by acquiring the hard-nosed Dema Kovalenko from RSL.

GoSounders is reporting that Seattle Sounders FC are closing in on Colombian striker Freddy Montero.

Real Salt Lake have signed head coach Jason Kreis to a 3-year contract extension.

The blogger from the Los-Toros blog about FC Dallas gives his thoughts about Dominic Oduro's stint with the Hoops.

Atlanta is now officially out of the running for an MLS franchise in 2011. They join Montréal as the second city to retract its bid. Atlanta's USL side, the Silverbacks, folded a few months back.

Meanwhile St. Louis is not yet in for 2011. Don Garber said the league would love to add St. Louis, but their bid lacks a big investor.

Also, yesterday at the draft, Bob Lenarduzzi talked about Vancouver's bid for an MLS franchise.

The Late Show by TFC Connected - Episode 2

Tonight on the Late Show, Benny Canuck sits down with ESPN analyst and former LA Galaxy President Alexi Lalas to discuss the MLS Draft. Enjoy!

Mo Johnston: In Negotiations with a South American Striker

Mo just said on the Fan 590 that we are entering negotiations with an experienced South American striker. He also mentioned he's working on a big centre half. Mo told Nigel that once he signs a striker and a centre back, he's going home.

Toronto FC at the Draft

The draft is done, and overall I think we did quite will. For me, one of the most surprising things was that no one traded picks in the first round, despite the dozen of rumours.

We drafted five players today, three of whom were in the first round, and are all said to be near the top of the college class in their respected positions. I don't know a lot about these guys, but here is a quick run-through of who we picked today in St. Louis, and my opinion on the selection.

No. 2 - Sam Cronin, MF: Cronin is a holding midfielder, and I've read that he was the best central midfielder at the draft. When we first drafted him, I was a little surprised, but if he can step in right away and do a good job, it could make a lot of sense. As well, if he is ready to step in, but his future isn't with us, then he is good trade bait.

No. 4 - O'Brian White, FW: I was surprised to see him selected with our no. 4 pick after just about every mock draft had him in at no. 13. Recent reports, though, say he will be healthy by April, and we have one of the world's best fitness coaches in Paul Winsper. I expect that Mo's going to be relying on Windy to whip O'Brian back in to shape. If he can get fit, he could be a player to watch. I'm pretty excited about him.

No. 13 - Stefan Frei, GK: The fact that we were still able to get him is fantastic. He was without a doubt the best goalkeeper in the draft, and is a Generation Adidas player. I don't know what Mo and Carver's plans are for him, but I've read that he's ready to be an MLS starter. I wouldn't slot him in just yet, but on paper I'd put him as our no. 2 keeper. I tought that Chivas USA would take him as a potential replacement for Brad Guzan, but, for whatever reason, they didn't. A great pick for us.

No. 34 - Mike Grella, FW: Grella would have been one of the top picks in this draft if he didn't have such strong intentions to head over to Europe. It's a bit of a gamble by Mo to take him, but at pick no. 34, why not? If he does head across the pond but fails to make an impact, we'll have first dibs on him.

No. 39 - Kyle Hall, FW: Hall is a native of Scarborough who played for Canada's U23s at the Olympic Qualifying tournament last fall, scoring in a 5-0 win over Guatemala. He's a young Canadian who could be an excellent depth signing for us.

Overall, I'm pretty pleased with the draft. I kind of wanted us to trade one of our first round picks for a big defender. As you an see, we didn't even draft a defender. This leads me to think that Mo is closing in on someone. If you have any thoughts on the draft, feel free to share.

It's Draft Day!

MLS Super Draft: The Number Ones

The 2009 MLS Super Draft takes place tomorrow from St. Louis, Missouri. The Super Draft has been in effect since 2000, when it replaced the original MLS College Draft and the original MLS Supplemental Draft.

From 1996 to 1999, the MLS College Draft was in effect for players graduating college or university to be made available to all MLS clubs. From 1996 to 1999 as well, there was a Supplemental Draft, which was for players who were coming to the league from somewhere other than college or university. In 2000, the division between the two was eliminated, and the Super Draft was created.

For numerous reasons throughout the past 9 years, the Supplemental Draft was in effect in 2003, and then again from 2005 to 2008. In the fall, Don Garber announced that the Supplemental Draft was once again being ditched.

The process of rewarding teams for failure in the previous year is a little confusing, and when a player is coming out of college at 21 or 22, he isn't really at the ideal development stage of his career. Since it was put into effect, the Super Draft has taken place eight times before this year, meaning there have been eight no. 1 picks. How effective is the draft? Hopefully this can shed some light on the topic.

Here is a quick review of every no. 1 pick in the MLS Super Draft since its inception...

2000: Steve Shak, selected by the MetroStars
Selection Rating: 0/10

WIth the first pick of the inaugural Super Draft, the MetroStars selected Steve Shak out of UCLA. He was projected to be selected in the third or fourth round, but ended up being picked ahead of Nick Garcia, Danny Califf, and Carlos Bocanegra. So, what happened to him? Shak played 1.5 seasons with the MetroStars before being traded to the Colorado Rapids. He made only six appearances for Colorado, and has since left MLS. He is currently plying his trade with the Charlotte Eagles in USL-2.

2001: Chris Carierri, selected by the San Jose Earthquakes
Selection Rating: 2/10

Heard of this guy? Me neither. Carierri is currently 28, and coaching at the Carolina Soccer Club, in Raleigh, NC. When the Quakes drafted him, he vowed to bring them a championship. They did indeed win a championship, but he was not there to see it. His first two seasons in the league were pretty impressive though, scoring 5 goals and 4 assists in his rookie season, following that up with 11 goals and 5 assists in his second season. His production slowed after this, though, and after playing with a couple of USL sides, he ended up retiring in 2008 after a season with the Carolina Railhawks.

2002: Chris Gbandi, selected by the Dallas Burn
Selection Rating: 5/10

Gbandi is a left-back from Liberia, who played his college soccer at UCONN. This is the first no. 1 Super Draft pick to make a real consistent impact with his team. His rookie season should have been in 2002, but he was injured for the entire year after tearing his ACL. In the next five seasons, Gbandi made 111 appearances for Dallas, scoring 3 goals. In 2006, he was named the team's defender of the year. He has since moved on to FK Haugesund in Norway, and has received one cap from the Liberian national team. He was selected ahead of current MLS stars Taylor Twellman, Brad Davis, and Justin Mapp.

2003: Alecko Eskandarian, selected by DC United
Selection Rating: 7/10

Esky, who played in college at the University of Virginia, is the son of a former New York Cosmo. In his first season in MLS, he scored 3 goals and 2 assists, before breaking out in his second year. In 2004, he lead DC in scoring with 10 goals, and scored 2 goals in the MLS Cup Final to help his team defeat the Kansas City Wizards. He received the match MVP award for his efforts. In 2006, DC played Real Madrid in a friendly, and Esky scored his team's lone goal in a 1-1 draw. In 2007, he played for us and for Real Salt Lake, scoring only 2 goals. He has since signed for Chivas USA, and his form has picked up, scoring 5 goals in 11 appearances in 2008.

2004: Freddy Adu, selected by DC United
Selection Rating: 6/10

America's self-proclaimed wonderkid became the world's youngest ever professional soccer player in 2004 at the age of 14. In his rookie season, Adu scored scored 5 goals and 3 assists, playing in all 30 of DC's matches that year. He soon became a regular starter for United, playing with them in 2005 and 2006. After a brief stint at Real Slakt Lake in 2007, Adu signed for Benfica in Portugal. He failed to settle in at Benfica, and has since been loaned out to AS Monaco in the French League, where he hasn't fared any better.

2005: Nikolas Besagno, selected by Real Salt Lake
Selection Rating: 0/10

Currently 20 years old, Besagno is without a club at the moment. After being drafted as one of the most highly touted American youth players, he made only 8 appearances for RSL before being loaned out to the Seattle Sounders of the USL. Behind Freddy Adu, Besagno was the second-youngest player to ever be drafted by an MLS club at the age of 16.

2006: Marvell Wynne, selected by the MetroStars
Selection Rating: 9/10

One of the MLS's most pure athletes, we all know that Wynne is known for his blazing speed. Mo Johnston traded for him early in his second season in MLS, after he had impressed the Scot during his rookie season at New York. Since his arrival here, Wynne has developed into one of the league's best defenders. Though he lacks a bit of positional sense, his athleticism and speed often makes up for it. He has been capped once by the USMNT, and has recently been getting regular call ups to the side.

2007: Maurice Edu, selected by Toronto FC
Selection Rating: 9/10

Edu's rookie season might have been the most impressive in Major League Soccer's 13-year history. After Mo drafted him for our expansion season, Edu slipped right into our starting eleven and never looked back. He scored 4 goals and 1 assist in his first season, and earned his first cap to the USMNT. In many of our eyes, his form dipped in his second season, but after an impressive showing at the Olympics, he was bought by Rangers for $5 million. Since his move to the Scottish giants, he has found playing time hard to come by.

2008: Chance Myers, selected by the Kansas City Wizards
Selection Rating: 5/10

It's hard to rate him after just one season, but his rookie campaign wasn't overly impressive. He made only 10 appearances for the Wizards last season, registering 5 shots total. We'll have to wait and see how it does this season.

So, there's a brief rundown of all of the Super Draft's no. 1 picks. What do you think? Is a draft worthwhile? Are draft picks worth holding on to, or should we traded them? If you have any thoughts, let me know.

Training Notes - January 14, 2009

The draft is tomorrow and rumours and trade speculation is swirling around the world of MLS. Word on the street is that we've already made an offer for Seattle's no. 1 pick in the draft, and I still think we'll be trading away our no. 2 and no. 4 picks.

I expect our no. 13 pick will go to O'Brian White, who would count as a domestic player for us, having grown up in Scarborough. He has, though, pledged his international allegiance.

The Links

Nigel Reed writes about the problems of the whole drafting system in his latest post, "D-Day Looms for Toronto FC." He also speculates on what Mo Johnston will do tomorrow in St. Louis.

Duane Rollins at The 24th Minute talks about the delayed growth of Canadian soccer. Like he says, it's taken a while, but with TFC, L'Impact, and the Whitecaps, we're finally getting somewhere.

The Gazette talks about how the Montréal Impact are thin at forward after the recent departure of Peter Byers to the San Jose Earthquakes.

In his MLS Hotstove, Ives confirms that the Galaxy have acquired Mike Magee from New York, he mentions that the Revs are possible suitors for Colorado Rapids outcast Christian Gomez, and talks about the draft. He also mentions that Chivas USA might make a move for Todd Dunivant after they trade Jonathan Bornstein.

Ives also provides additional information on the Van Den Bergh trade. It turns out VDB requested a move to the Hoops for personal reasons, and it's pretty cool of the Red Bulls to honour his request.

Sounder at Heart has an interview from a scout at the combine in Florida.

Steve Goff is contemplating that Omar Gonzalez will be the no. 1 pick at tomorrow's draft.

Down the Byline, a Kansas City Wizards' blog, lists the MLS 10,000 minute club on his blog.

Sean Keay has his daily reports up at MLSDraft.net. Check it out.

Training Notes - January 12, 2009

SBI gives likely no. 2 pick Omar Gonzalez a pretty bad review after Day 1 at the Combine. Hopefully this doesn't give FC Dallas any second thoughts about sending Adrian Serioux our way for this pick.

Ben Knight at Onward Soccer talks about the Montréal Impact's upcoming CONCACAF Champions League match which is scheduled at the Olympic Stadium.

Also from SBI, Landon Donovan's assist in his debut for Bayern Munich. It's a nice wish for Landycakes, but do any of us actually think he's in the same league as fellow Bayern strikers Luca Toni and Miroslav Klose?

David Beckham lasted 88 minutes on the pitch for AC Milan, starting at right midfield in a 4-3-3. They are impressed with Becks, and hope he can extend his two-month loan deal.

The Kansas City Wizards have re-signed Claudio Lopez for 2009. This year, Lopez will NOT be a DP spot, and is apparently taking quite the pay cut.

Steve Goff reports that DC United centre-half Gonzalo Peralta is returning to Argentina, and speculates that Gonzalo Martinez could be the next player out at DC.

Sounder at Heart talks about the importance of supporters groups ahead of his club's upcoming debut in MLS.

The MLS Super Draft is this week, and Sean Keay has been posting updates at MLSDraft.net. Check out what he's saying.

Since it's still only January, let's take a look back at one of the finer moments in our two-year history...

The "Bust" of MLS

Ah, the "bust" of MLS. This title probably has you thinking I'm going to talk about the MLS players' wives and girlfriends. I'm sorry if this bursts your bubble, but I'm not. This post is going to be talking about some of the signings in MLS over the last year or two that are, or were, busts.

So, do you get the title now? Get it? The "Bust" of MLS. I thought it was pretty clever, too.

On January 1, I listed my MLS Top 50 players, and I thought I would follow up on that a bit, just cause everyone loves lists (or, maybe I just like making them)

This will be a list of players that joined their respective MLS sides (via transfer or trades) within the last season or two with high expectations, and for one reason or another, failed to live up to them. Some of them have been released, and some of them are still signed on with more time to make an impact in 2009.

So let's get to it - here is the "Bust" of MLS...

20. Collin Samuel (TOR) - Mo Johnston hyped Samuel up before he joined our side in the summer of 2007. There wasn't much to be excited about, though, as his exit from the club was, for supporters, a welcome one. He was touted by many, myself included, to have a breakthrough season in 2008, but only lasted 90 minutes, in an aweful performance at Crew Stadium.

19. Marcelo Gallardo (DCU) - Like I said in my top 50 list, the jury is still out on this guy. He is signed on for $1.5 million as United's designated player, and missed half of 2008 through injury. He was contributing steadily from midfield during his time on the pitch, but he has to prove that he can stay fit and be that difference maker for DC in 2009.

18. Franco Niell (DCU) - One of six South Americans signed by DC before the 2008 season, Niell's loan deal in America's capital lasted merely until June, when he was waived. He didn't score in seven appearances for United, and with little pace and standing 5'4", it's not hard to see why.

17. Victor Sikora (FCD) - The Hoops signed the former Ajax player in the summer as an attacking option on the left wing. He started in 4 matches for Dallas, but soon after found a role on the bench, before being waived. Since his release, he has signed for Perth Glory in the Hyundai A-League.

16. Raphael Wicky (CHV) - If I told you that MLS had a player who had over 75 caps for the Suisse national team, and had played in 3 major tournaments for his country, would anyone come to mind? Wicky, still just 31, signed with Chivas USA in February of 2008, and made only 5 appearances with the Goats, struggling with chronic injuries all season. Like Gallardo, he will need to prove he can stay fit and use his experience to help his side.

15. Jose Carvallo (DCU) - Another one of DC's South American pre-season signings, Carvalho was brought in as a potential replacement in goal for the departed Troy Perkins. It didn't work out for Carvallo, though, as his one appearance for United was a 4-1 defeat to Real Salt Lake.

14. Peguero Jean Phillippe (SJE) - If you think back to the beginning of the 2008 season, San Jose's offense was lead by the unproven Kei Kamara. In an attempt for some cover, Frank Yallop signed former Red Bull Peguero Jean Phillippe on loan from Brondby. The Haitian played in 2 matches for the Quakes, before an injury ended his season, and ultimately his playing career.

13. Christian Gomez (COL) - This is a hard one to assess, as he started the season quite well before losing his place in the side. He cost the Rapids their designated player spot, and for whatever reason, hasn't been able to make the impact that coach Gary Smith wants from him. He's apparently being shopped around, but at 34 and maximum non-DP salary, is he worth it for anyone?

12. Maykel Galindo (CHV) - One year ago, Galindo would have been in my top 50, but after a year of poor form and injury, he has to prove that his first year with Chivas wasn't a fluke. After scoring 12 goals in 2007, he made only 10 appearances in 2008, scoring only once. Can he get things going in 2009, or will the Cuban be known as a one-year wonder?

11. Franco Caraccio (HOU) - The 21 year-old Argentine was brought in by the Dynamo to give them more attacking options after the departures of Joseph Ngwenya and Nate Jaqua. Caraccio failed to impress though, scoring only 2 goals in 10 appearances, in one of the league's most potent attacks.

10. Ivan Trujillo (KCW) - The Colombian scored the Wizards' first goal in the 2008 season in a 2-1 win over DC United. Since then, he has gone from a regular starter to a regular reserve. In a team lacking in offense, Trujillo failed to produce any kind of goalscoring threat for KC, and has since been released.

9. Gabriel Cichero (NYRB) - One of Juan Carlos Osorio's summer signings for New York, the Venezuelan international was supposed to be the Red Bulls leader in their defense. He never found his feet in MLS, though, and after a series of dismal performances was dropped from the side. The Red Bulls opted to release him in December, rather than extend his loan deal.

8. Gonzalo Martinez (DCU) - Hey, check it out - another one of DC's pre-season South American signings. Martinez was another player DC was hoping would shine for them, but his performances often left much to be desired. Steve Goff is speculating that he could be the next player waived by United.

7. Tomasz Frankowski (CHI) - Frankowski joined the fire after a long career in Europe, where he was capped by Poland 22 times, scoring 10 goals, including a goal against England at Old Trafford. He was expected to help bolster the Fire's already solid attack, but scored only two goals, each in the same match. A string of poor performances left him on the bench until he was finally waived after the season ended.

6. Juan Pietravallo (NYRB) - He's the second summer signing by Juan Carlos Osorio to make my list. Pietravallo was more or less a walking red card after his arrival to MLS. He was brought in to play in a holding role to shore up the Red Bulls midfield, but did just the opposite, conceding weak free kicks, and eventually being dropped to a substitutes role.

5. Laurent Robert (TOR) - We all witnessed this one quite closely. After his first few performances for us, it appeared that we had signed an MLS star. As the season went on, though, Robert's attitude and performances became worse and worse, before he was eventually waived in August. For a player with his skill, it was worth the risk, but after giving him a chance to shine, I was fine with his release. Anyone want a Robert jersey, email me!

4. Gonazalo Peralta (DCU) - In a similar situation to Cichero's, Peralta was brought to DC to shore up their backline, and while doing okay, was definitely not worth his $200K wage. His release from United had been rumoured for quite a while, and Steve Goff learned today that Peralta will be returning to his native Argentina.

3. Kenny Deuchar (RSL) - I don't want to rag on the guy, because I think he still has the potential to succeed in MLS. Throughout the 2008 season, though, Deucher went from Salt Lake's no. 1 striker to their no. 4 striker. He signed from Gretna in the Scottish Premier League, and perhaps is lack of goals is a testament to the quality of MLS compared to the SPL. Maybe I'm wrong, though.

2. Eduardo Dominguez (LAG) - Dominguez gave Galaxy supporters high hopes when he was signed in the summer. The Argentine was expected to provide some much-needed defensive stability to LA. Unfortunately, his first appearance for the Gals saw him give Kenny Cooper a nice assist in a 4-0 loss, and he only went on to play 2 more times after that. He has since been released and has returned to Argentina.

1. Jorge Rojas (NYRB) - How many of you watched his league debut at Giants Stadium against the Galaxy? All of you? Perfect. Then you would have seen a player score two assists, and look like the newest star player in MLS. He has since been dropped to the Red Bulls' bench, unable to get a game because of Sinisa Ubiparapovic (say that name 10 times fast). He's the current captain of the Venezuelan national team...I guess not every player in South America is gold after all!

So, a couple of these guys have 2009 to prove me wrong, and for the sake of the quality of the play in the league, it'd be nice if they stepped it up. What do you think - am I way off? Is there anyone I missed? Isn't it obvious why the Red Bulls are shite? If you have any thoughts, please send them my way.

The DP Issue

Just a few weeks ago, I talked about how a designated player would be a good fit with Toronto FC. At the time, everything we heard mentioned that DP was on its way, possibly by this past Monday or Tuesday. Early this afternoon, Kristian Jack figured out that we will not be getting a designated player at the beginning of the season.

I still think that a DP would be a good fit with our team, but he would have to be the right player, and right now, we evidently haven't been able to find that player.

The DP issue was brushed aside a little bit when we traded for Dwayne De Rosario. In some peoples' opinions, he is worth a DP spot himself. We should also bear in mind that before the 2007 season, Chivas USA traded their DP spot to New York for Amado Guevara. Both Guevara and De Rosario are among the league's best at their position in attacking midfield, and when you put those two together with Carl Robinson, we possibly have the league's best central midfield.

If you read Ives' post today, it would appear that Mo Johnston is 100% focused on using the draft to improve our squad - not through draftees, but through trades. Ives mentions that we could be in for both Adrian Serioux and Wilman Conde, each of whom are established defenders in MLS. If we acquired these two, it could potentially solve our defensive problems. A defensive line of Wynne / Conde / Serioux / Brennan is pretty good.

The biggest issue that we were hoping a DP would solve is our goalscoring issue. Aside from DP speculation, there hasn't been much news about a new striker. The addition of DeRo will certainly help both Barrett's and Guevara's goalscoring totals, but you have to feel that Mo must be working on a deal for another striker. Hypothetically speaking, if Rohan Ricketts can score 5 this year, if DeRo scores 10, if Guevara scores 7, and Barrett scores 12, that's 34 goals from just 4 players. I think that all of the previously mentioned numbers are attainable by these players.

Obviously, one of the main issues with signing a DP is the $400K cap hit. We already know DeRo will be making $400K, and Carl Robinson will be making around $300K. We can't really afford to become an "LA Galaxy" and spend all our money on 3 players, but lose 5-3 all the time.

What we want with TFC has to necessitate the TFC supporter in us, not the football supporter. in us. It would be awesome to see a world class superstar at BMO Field, but if that's not the best thing for the team, we have to get over it.

I have faith in Mo to put things together for us by March, and if it means bringing us more depth and a more solid starting eleven, I won't be too sad if we didn't sign a designated player.

No DP for TFC

Thanks to Kristian Jack for digging this up. Here's his post about it. More to come later. Guys, this is not the end of the world.

Training Notes - January 7, 2009

With the draft fast-approaching, trade speculation is starting to gain more and more momentum. According to Soccer by Ives' latest article, Trader Mo is ready to deal with over half of the teams in the league are interested in acquiring our no. 2 and no. 4 picks.

The other day, Buzz Carrick said that he doesn't think Adrian Serioux will be coming to Toronto, but it's looking more and more likely that the Hoops will try to work out a deal in order to be able to select defender Omar Gonzalez. If you were to ask me right now, I would tell you that I expect this to get done, one way or another.

Another option that Ives mentions that is pretty exciting to think about is Chicago's big Colombian centre half, Wilman Conde. Conde is the perfect candidate for the big, commanding rock in our defense that John Carver has expressed a need for. Apparently we were trying to get Conde earlier in 2008, but that trade didn't work out. If Chicago are willing to part with him, I can't see Mo passing up the opportunity to trade for him.

Here are some links for some other news and notes today...

Nana Attakora-Gyan was named the top male U20 soccer player in Canada in 2008 on Tuesday. Of all the young Canadian's on TFC, I think he has the most potential to be a star defender in Major League Soccer. John Carver has high hopes for him as well.

Duane Rollins offers some more information about the DeRo situation. He maintains that the deal will get done.

According to Julian De Guzman, the CSA is a cancer to the development of the game in our country. Does anyone disagree with him?

Tribal Football has Rosenborg fullback Roy Miller linked with a one year lean move to Seattle Sounders FC. They also mention that the Sounders are also keen on Valencia striker Fernando Morientes.

The Chicago Fire are closing in on re-signing designated player Cuauhtémoc Blanco.

FC Dallas reject and former DP, Denilson, has been given a trial at Bolton Wanderers. He scored one goal in his brief tenure in MLS - a penalty against us. If he can't cut it in MLS, why does Gary Megson think he'll be fit for the Premiership?

The Wizards may have no fans, but they are still at the top in venue capacity! Even with a new SSS coming, does anyone think KC will get more than 10,000 a game anytime soon?

MLS has officially released the 2009 Generation Adidas class.

Analysts are predicting that if Portland were to be awarded an MLS franchise in 2011, they wouldn't turn a profit until 2015.

Montréal Impact defender and former Canadian international Gabriel Gervais has retired from professional soccer.

DC United have re-signed midfielder Santino Quaranta. Many DC supporters thought Quaranta's play was excellent in the absence of injured star Marcelo Gallardo.

According to Soccer365, the Los Angeles Galaxy are considering making a player for veteran Roma defender Christian Panucci.

MLS Super Draft Coverage

So, the draft is in 8 days, and I'm not going to pretend I know anything about it. I know about a few of the players, but not enough to provide any coverage.

One thing I can tell you is that you can expect some trades within the next week - trades for both picks and players.

If you're looking for some good coverage over the next week or so, check out MLSDraft.net, by U-Sector's very own Sean Keay. He's had this site up and running for a few months now, and posts regularly with updates on all the top prospects.

Training Notes - January 5, 2009

The rumoured DP announcement hasn't happened yet, and I highly doubt it will be taking place this week. There has been no news on the issue since Nigel Reed dropped the hint on the Fan 590 just a few weeks ago. I do remember, though, when David Beckham was signed by the LA Galaxy, everything took place that day - the initial rumour, and then the signing. I don't necessarily think that a DP signing means days of rumours and speculation beforehand. We could be in for a surprise.

It appears that the "Championship Outcast" well has dried up. Apparently we're very interested in FC Dallas defender Adrian Serioux (See below), and we could also make a move for Los Angeles Galaxy defender Ante Jazic. Jazic is able to play at left back, centre half, or left midfield. He did, however, spend a majority of the 2008 season out with injury, and we all know that turf and injuries don't mix too well. I would expect these trades to take place around draft day (January 15), involving some of our first round draft picks. Word on the street is that Mo is looking for guys to come in and make an impact right away.

The Links

Duane Rollins at the 24th Minute is reporting that sources have told him that Joey Melo has been let go.

It looks like Friday's concerns over Philadelphia's SSS have been brushed aside already. Apparently the market's fine!

According to FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman, Kenny Cooper will stay with the Hoops for 2009.

Soccer by Ives
says that St. Louis bid for MLS expansion makes the most sense out of every bid, and his reasons are pretty good.

David Beckham says he's in Milan for more reasons than to earn a spot in the England team. He also mentions that he loves the LA Galaxy.

Sounder at Heart's latest post features Toronto FC TV. He argues that statistics technology can be very beneficial in both scouting results and on-field results.

Fans FC has Robbie Fowler linked to the Chicago Fire. The Fire already have Blanco and McBride, so what's another retiree, right?

SBI: Adrian Serioux to TFC?

Following up on Ben Knight's speculation that Adrian Serioux could be traded our way, it looks like Ives Galarcep has caught on to this one as well. Apparently the Hoops are keen on acquiring our no. 2 draft pick so they can select Omar Gonzalez from Maryland.

Ives is speculating that Dallas could offer us Serioux and their no. 5 draft pick in order to acquire our no. 2 pick.

I think that when it comes to acquiring defenders, we need players who can step in right away and do the job, and Serioux fits the bill perfectly, especially being Canadian. We had a pretty terrible World Cup Qualifying campaign, but on the whole, Serioux was one of our best players in the centre of our national team's defense.

If acquired, it would be his third time on a Mo Johnston side. Prior to playing for Houston, he was originally signed by the Metrostars, where Johnston previously coached. The second time was after the 2006 expansion draft, before Mo traded him to Dallas for Ronnie O'Brien.

On a side note, Seattle Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid is a big fan of Tyrone Marshall, so if Serioux is signed, I wouldn't be surprised to see Marshall sent to SSFC to open up some cap space (and the jersey #14 for DeRo).

Training Notes - January 2, 2009

The soccer world is buzzing as it is the January transfer window. Over in Europe, it's time to reshuffle your squad and bolster your ranks as you head into the final stretch of the season. Over here, it's all about preparing for the 2009 season and many of us are expecting this to be a big month for us. Isn't the transfer window just awesome?

Here are some news and notes for today...

According to Ben Knight at Onward Soccer, we might be making a play for Canadian international defender Adrian Serioux. Many of us will remember him as an expansion draft original, who was traded to Dallas in exchange for Ronnie O'Brien. After seeing Serioux's performances at centre-half for Canada in World Cup qualifying, this is a move I would welcome with open arms. Despite many bleak performances by the team, he was one bright spot. In order for this move to happen, Tyrone Marshall will likely be dealt to play for Sigi Schmid in Seattle.

I've heard from numerous sources that we will likely have news about our designated player by Tuesday.

Chris Birchall has left Coventry City to join the San Jose Earthquakes. The Trinidadian is only 24, having played for the Soca Warriors at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Glenn Davis is speculating that Zimbabwan striker Joseph Ngwenya could be set for a return to the Houston Dynamo. Having already lost DeRo and Nate Jaqua, the Dynamo will be looking to improve their offensive options.

US International Lee Nguyen looks to be considering coming to MLS from his Danish club, Randers. He is currently on trial, though, with Hoang Anh Gia Lai in Vietnam.

It looks like Philadelphia's SSS could be in trouble. Philly soccer fans are likely treading nervous waters, as their city's bid has been in trouble since the economic downturn. Is it possible that Miami will take Philly's spot in 2010?

Goal.com has it's MLS team of 2008 up today. It looks like a pretty solid lineup, though I'm not sure Chris Albright should be there.

Also from Goal.com, Bruce Arena has backed Mo Edu to get some more regular first team action with Rangers.

The MLS Top 50

Happy New Year everyone! I just checked out the Footy Blog and Kristian Jack posted a fantastic list of his top 100 players in the Premiership. This is the source of inspiration for this piece, where I will run down the top 50 players in Major League Soccer.

I'm going to try to put away any bias I have - both towards our own players, and against certain players, like Landon Donovan, and Guillermo Barros Schelotto.

Ahead of the 2009 season, players are both coming and going from the league, so I in order to make this list, the player has to have played in MLS. Freddie Ljungberg, for example, on Seattle Sounders FC, will likely be one of the league's top 10 players when he's healthy. Though he is currently an MLS player, he, or other players in the same situation, will not be considered.

So, enough talk, let's get to it.

50. Conor Casey (COL) - The former US international had a breakout year in MLS after a slow 2007 season. To move up on the list, he'll have to keep up his good form in 2009.

49. Marvell Wynne (TOR) - Not the best player positionally, but one of the league's top raw athletes. If he can continue to stay solid defensively and contribute offensively, he will further emerge as one of the league's best wing backs.

48. Gino Padula (CLB) - The Argentine joined Columbus after a long career in England. A mid-season injury kept him out for a number of matches, but he was immense when he was on the pitch for the Crew.

47. Jay Heaps (NER) - One of the league's veteran defenders, Heaps will be expected to lead the Revolution's backline in 2009 with the departure of Michael Parkhurst to Denmark. Weird Fact: I have his rookie card, and don't ask me how I got it.

46. Corey Gibbs (COL) - The American international was a late addition by the Rapids and helped bolster a leaky defense at the end of the 2008 season. Look for him to be a major contributor to the team in 2009.

45. Dane Richards (NYRB) - The Jamaican had a strong finish to the 2008 season, with a brilliant man of the match performance at Houston in the playoffs. He is easily one of the league's fastest players.

44. Will Johnson (RSL) - The young Canadian scored the goal of the year and could emerge as one of the league's most exciting midfielders in 2009. I'm about as bitter as anyone that we didn't sign this guy.

43. Rohan Ricketts (TOR) - He has the skill to be one of the league's top wingers, but lacked the consistency in his debut season in MLS. He was, however, Mr. Versatility for us, playing in several different positions on several occasions thanks to international call-ups.

42. Bakary Soumare (CHI) - Along with Gonzalo Segares and Wilman Conde, Bakary Samare performed in one of the league's strongest defense lines. The Malian was considering playing for the USMNT at one point.

41. Kevin Hartman (KCW) - His haircut may suck, but he's still a pretty good keeper. Age hasn't gotten the best of him, as he was one of the Wizards' consistently solid players.

40. Marcelo Gallardo (DCU) - The jury's still out on DC's designated player as he was injured for over half of the season. If you look at his stats, though, he was on pace for 8 goals and 6 assists, which isn't that bad of a return from a midfielder.

39. Chad Barrett (TOR) - On top of being capped by the US, Barrett was consistently on the scoresheet for both us and the Chicago Fire. If he can keep this up, he may emerge as one of the most dangerous strikers in MLS.

38. Chris Rolfe (CHI) - Rolfe finished off strongly, scoring a hat-trick on Prime Time against the Red Bulls in October. He is an effective player both up front and on the wing.

37. Bobby Boswell (HOU) - The star blogger flourished in Houston after a move from DC United. He is currently in Turkey, rumoured to be on trial with Antalyaspor.

36. Andre Rocha (FCD) - The Brazilian was the Hoops' midfield catalyst, scoring a number of phenomenal goals.

35. Steve Ralston (NER) - This guy is MLS through and through, and before a season-ending injury against the Wizards, was a very strong contributor both on and off the field for the Revs. Once he's healthy again, look for him to be a major player in New England in 09.

34. Amado Guevara (TOR) - The 2004 league MVP came to us in April, and despite some fantastic performances in his first few matches, slowed down a bit as the season progressed. Always dangerous around the 18-yard box, it will be interesting to see how we work him with DeRo in 2009.

33. Frankie Hejduk (CLB) - Hejduk is the ultimate fan favourite. A strong player on the field, Hejduk is 100% behind his club, and leads by example. He's a pretty awkward player, but somehow always manages to get the job done.

32. Wilman Conde (CHI) - The Colombian took a few weeks to settle in Chicago after signing to play under Juan Carlos Osorio before Osorio went to New York. As 2008 went on, he emerged as one of the league's best centre halves.

31. Jonathan Bornstein (CHV) - Bornstein featured strongly for the Goats last season after emerging as one of the league's top wing backs just a few years before.

30. Brian McBride (CHI) - If he had been here all season long, he would definitely be higher up on the list. Coming late in the season, we didn't really get a chance to see McBride at his best. Look for him to excel in 2009.

29. Christian Gomez (COL) - This is an odd one. One of the league's best playmakers, making maximum non-DP salary, can't get a game on a mediocre Western Conference side in Colorado. Christian Gomez would be a sure starter on at least 10 of the clubs in MLS.

28. Francisco Mendoza (CHV) - This young Mexican is a fun player to watch. A strong work ethic makes him a pretty strong midfielder, both attacking and defending.

27. Kyle Bekerman (RSL) - Salt Lake's captain is a rock in the midfield for the club. A versatile player, Bekerman can contribute from both the middle and from the wings.

26. Ricardo Clark (HOU) - Clark gets regular call-ups from Bob Bradley for the USMNT. Over the past few seasons, he has allowed DeRo to pull the strings in the Dynamo's attack. One of the league's best holding midfielders.

25. Taylor Twellman (NER) - Injured for most of 2008, Twellman is historically one of the league's most prolific strikers. He hasn't ever managed to succeed on the international scene, but will likely be a star in 2009 if he's healthy.

24. Ronnie O'Brien (SJE) - The Irishman has been heralded as one of the league's best right midfielders for a number of years now, and didn't let up his good play for the Quakes in 2008. His experience both on and off the field for San Jose was invaluable.

23. Dave Van Den Bergh (NYRB) - The Dutchman has played up front, on the wing, and in defense for the Red Bulls. He was a significant contributor to New Yorks run to the MLS Cup Final. I still wish we had taken him in the 2006 Expansion Draft.

22. Robbie Rogers (CLB) - This guy is fun to watch. Rogers emerged in Columbus as one of the league's best wingers in 2008. His pace and footwork reeked havoc upon MLS defenses, and he scored some cracking goals.

21. Jimmy Conrad (KCW) - The Wizards captain came second in Wizards' goalscoring from defense. He's a massive presence in Kansas City's defense, performing consistently game in and game out.

20. Dwayne De Rosario (TOR) - His numbers may have been down in 2008, but there is no question that DeRo is one of the best and most exciting players in league history. Now at home with us, here's hoping he can deliver his best for his hometown crowd.

19. Joe Cannon (SJE) - When building a team, many coaches will try to build from the back. Frank Yallop did just that when he acquired Cannon from Los Angeles before the 2008 season. Cannon was immense in goal for the Earthquakes, and will continue to be a leader in 2009.

18. Pablo Mastroeni (COL) - The American International can play effectively as a holding midfielder and a central defender, and is a leader both on and off the pitch in Colorado. He is the key to the Rapids.

17. Darren Huckerby (SJE) - Joining the league in July, Huckerby was a menace to defenses, scoring 6 goals in his first 9 games. He must continue his good form in 2009 to prove that age and injury troubles won't get the best of him.

16. Sacha Kljesten (CHV) - The young American became an on field leader for Chivas USA in 2008. He's an exciting midfielder, who is starting to be more consistently called into the USMNT.

15. Jaime Moreno (DCU) - When DC United was decimated with injuries, veteran striker Jaime Moreno emerged as the club's true leader, scoring 10 goals and 10 assists. He is the league's all-time leading scorer, making him one of the best players in MLS history.

14. Brian Ching (HOU) - After a slow start to 2008, Brian Ching picked things up and finished well for Houston. He has size, pace, and a good finishing touch, making him one of the league's best forwards. He'll have to learn to work with Stuart Holden after DeRo's departure to Toronto.

13. Carl Robinson (TOR) - Our best player over the last two seasons, Robbo is a consistent rock in our midfield. A true leader both on and off the field, his experience has been invaluable in getting our feet off the ground in MLS.

12. Matt Reis (NER) - For me, he's the league's best keeper. He's a powerful goalkeeper who rarely makes stupid mistakes, breathing confidence throughout his side. The only reason he hasn't been called up to the USMNT more often is because of guys like Kasey Keller, Brad Friedel and Tim Howard.

11. Gonzalo Segares (CHI) - A finalist in defender of the year voting, the Costa Rican emerged as one of the league's top defenders in 2008. He's a tough tackler, and isn't afraid to go into a challenge.

10. Luciano Emilio (DCU) - Like most of his DC United teammates, Emilio was injured for a lot of last season. Despite this, the 2007 league MVP is still one of the league's top strikers. He's dangerous both on and off the ball, able to score from just about anywhere.

9. Kenny Cooper (FCD) - The big man in Dallas emerged as the league's best target forward. He carried the Hoops through the season, scoring many priceless goals for Schellas Hyndeman's side. He's been linked with a move to Cardiff City in the Championship.

8. Chad Marshall (CLB) - The reigning defender of the year has re-signed with the Crew after a trial with Mainz. He's a commanding figure in the back and a hard-nosed tackler. He scored vital goals in the Eastern Conference final and the MLS Cup final.

7. David Beckham (LAG) - His team may suck, but he certainly does not. He scored 5 goals and 10 assists for Los Angeles this season, which is a good return from midfield. There is now doubt in my mind that he is the best right midfielder in MLS.

6. Javier Morales (RSL) - In my mind, Morales was the most underrated player in MLS last season. He was the engine behind every Real Salt Lake attack, contributing both goals and assists. Look for him to contribute even more on the field in 2009.

5. Shalrie Joseph (NER) - For me, he is the best holding midfielder in MLS. He is such a strong and commanding force in the midfield, he would easily slide into the starting eleven of any team in the league.

4. Cuauhtémoc Blanco (CHI) - The Mexican may be old, but he's still playing pretty well. The league's second ever designated player, he transformed the Fire with his arrival in 2007, helping them reach two consecutive Eastern Conference finals.

3. Landon Donovan (LAG) - Okay, I hate Landycakes as much as you do, but after scoring 20 goals and 9 assists on the league's worst team, I don't think there is any question that this guy is one of the best in the league. The American goldenboy will be considered one of the top players in MLS history.

2. Juan Pablo Angel (NYRB) - The Colombian had an injury-plagued 2008 season, but is quite possibly the best pure striker in MLS history. In my mind, the best value for money with regards to designated players.

1. Guillermo Barros Schelotto (CLB) - Let's forget about the playacting. When he's playing the game, there are very few in the league who can rival his set pieces and playmaking abilities. He deservedly won the 2008 MVP award, leading the Crew to the MLS Cup.

Okay. Now I need your feedback. Am I way off? Did I leave anyone out? What's your top 50? Let me know what you think.
