This morning at 3:30 AM, it turns out that I was awake to catch the Grand Final of the Hyundai A-League. How convenient.
Robb Watson gave us a pretty good preview of the match yesterday, and it turns out his final prediction was correct. He said the Melbourne Victory would get the win, and they did just that, beating Adelaide United 1-0. Midfielder Tom Pondeljak scored the match's only goal with a long-range strike on 59 minutes.
The match was turned on its head after just ten minutes, when Adelaide United's Brazilian striker Cristiano was sent off for an elbow on Melbourne's Rod Vargas. I'm not so sure it should have been a red card - there was a lot of blood, and definite contact, but he didn't swing the elbow at all. The colour commentator was particularly critical of the call.
After Cristiano was sent off, it was all Melbourne. They really should have scored a couple goals before the first half was over. After wave after wave of attack though, the Victory couldn't find the final product. After 59 minutes, the end product finally came, when Tom Pondeljak scored the eventual winner.
Down to ten men and losing one nil, it seemed like Adelaide were done and dusted, until Melbourne's Danny Allsopp was sent off in the 65th minute. This was when I dozed off (good timing, right?). It turns out that Adelaide had no answer, and the Victory won their second Grand Final.
From the 60 or so minutes that I saw, I thought it was awesome. The atmosphere was brilliant. It reminded me of the match in Montréal this past week. There were about 53,000 people at the Telstra Dome in Melbourne, and the Victory's supporters were really making their voices heard. As for the quality on the pitch, it was very similar to watching two of the top teams in Major League Soccer play.
